WCC provides extensive training. Training programmes are tailored to suit the individual, based on their skill level.

For someone with a class 4 license, WCC can assist with coaching and classroom time to successfully gain a full class 5 licence. The WCC cadet programme caters for people with a full Class 1 license who wish to gradually work their way through their licenses to a Class 5.

Both roles are advertised on Trade Me periodically throughout the year, however anyone who is interested in approaching WCC direct is welcome to do so by sending an email and CV to: craig@waicon.co.nz

Our training team consists of two Nelson based Driver trainers and one in our Marlborough operations, as well as 12 driver leaders who also assist during the training period. A Driver Leader is not only a good example of how we want the job to be done, but they are also good communicators and share their industry knowledge and experiences to help new staff into their role.

Typically, a new driver will ride as a passenger with several different driver leaders for a minimum of a week, but usually more, giving them the opportunity to make friends and learn the non-driving tasks of the job e.g. loading and unloading procedures, the use of weighbridges, documentation, radio procedures etc.

After this they will move to job sharing with either a driver leader or a driver trainer, progressing from driving the truck empty to loaded, both on and off highway. Once a new driver is assessed as competent, their work assignments will be managed via the WCC dispatch. Initially they will be sent to sites they are familiar with whilst they gain experience in the role.

New drivers will be assigned a mentor which will be a driver leader and someone who the new driver has clicked with during the training process.   The mentor will talk with the new driver on a daily basis via the fleet link radio and/or if they cross paths during the course of the day at different customer locations. The training process is also followed up with 60 and 90 day checks with the driver trainer who will do an in cab audit which may or may not highlight some areas that need some tweaking.
